e Deputy Director is a key leader and conservation strategist for the Caribbean Division. They provide strategic leadership and are accountable for ensuring the timely execution of TNC's conservation vision and strategy in the Caribbean, producing measurable results and maintaining organizational values. They ensure outcomes are achieved by conservation programs in the Division, contribute strong intellectual input, and have considerable decision-making latitude from the allocation of financial and/or human resources to the formulation and execution of priority cross-boundary strategies. The Deputy Director is accountable for the alignment of activities by securing, coordinating, and configuring resources, capacity, and programs to address the Division's most critical opportunities, threats, and strategies. RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE Supervises Directors of geography-based teams and supports the design and implementation of complex and diverse projects, often encompassing multiple programs. This may involve coordinating the work of professionals inside and outside the organization and incorporating cross-disciplinary knowledge to support Division and program objectives. Must lead and motivate their team and be able to work effectively with and through others in a decentralized and geographically dispersed organization. Collaborates with North America Region Conservation Directors, U.S. and International Government Relations staff, Global Strategy Leads, and other organizational leaders to address our highest conservation priorities. Serves as a spokesperson for TNC to internal and external audiences, including staff, volunteers, the Caribbean Board of Trustees, public and private donors, government agencies and officials, community leaders and other partners, and cultivates those audiences to support and promote TNC's mission and objectives. Supports philanthropy, marketing, and external affairs in the cultivation and direct solicitation of donors (private, corporate, and bilateral and multilateral organizations) to meet fundraising goals. Engages with the Caribbean Science team and External Affairs team to facilitate the application of new products and data for conservation and policy outcomes. Responsible for financial management, including setting financial goals, analyzing results, and guiding the implementation of corrective actions as required. Conducts highly diversified work that involves participation in the formulation and evaluation of broad policies and/or long-term programs, or making decisions, which typically have broad organizational impact. Has high level management and leadership responsibility for 5
staff members as well as external relationships critical to the success of the organization. May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances. May require frequent travel domestically and/or internationally and evening and weekend hours. DISCRETION/LATITUDE/DECISION-MAKING Work program is implemented through consultation and agreement with the Executive Director, but decisions are often made independently with little or no opportunity for management collaboration or oversight. Makes independent strategic decisions frequently based on analysis, ambiguous information, experience, and context. Must assess the potential impact of decisions on colleagues' work, public image, scientific credibility, and financial and legal standings and implement corrective actions when required. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS BA/BS degree and 12 years' relevant international conservation experience, including working at a senior level or equivalent combination of education and experience. Supervisory experience, including motivating, leading, setting objectives and managing performance of a large multi-cultural team. Experience delegating responsibility and authority to staff and clearly defining expectations. Experience fostering an environment of respect, creativity, and professional growth. Fundraising experience, including identifying donor prospects and donor cultivation with demonstrated experience in fundraising on behalf of a program and in support of organizational global priorities. Experience designing, implementing, and directing complex and/or multiple projects of strategic importance, including managing finances, supervising multidisciplinary professionals, and coordinating the work of partners while meeting deadlines. Experience with current trends and practices in conservation including climate adaptation and mitigation, complex conservation agreements and/or sustainable financing mechanisms, marine and/or terrestrial protected area management, freshwater, marine and terrestrial spatial planning, community-based conservation in the Caribbean. Written and verbal fluency in English, with communication and presentation skills. Experience with the cultures and history of the Caribbean region. Experience in partnership development with non-profit partners, community groups, and/or government agencies. Experience networking with high level conservation contacts. Experience working with methods and standards of biodiversity information systems and initiatives. Experience conceiving and implementing strategic and creative initiatives. Experience negotiating. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS Multi- lingual and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated. Working command of Spanish desired. Master's degree and 12-15 years' experience in conservation practice or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience developing practical applications of scientific concepts and technical innovations for conservation purposes. Strong demonstrated knowledge of the political and socioeconomic context of the Caribbean, particularly with respect to environmental affairs. Politically savvy and strong networking skills.
Salary Range:
$100K -- $150K
Minimum Qualification
Education AdministrationEstimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.
