WSS MASTER TECHNICIAN (METER SECTION)

Position Information The Department of Environmental Services (DES) is seeking an experienced Water/Sewer/Streets (WSS) Master Technician to perform senior level trades work with the Water Meter Section to support work related to the operation maintenance, replacement, repairs, and new installations of water meters.
This position will also conduct water meter vault inspections, preventative meter testing and maintenance programs, provide customer service, dispatching, and provide snow removal support and assistance.
DES is the vital link that continuously provides our customers with services that contribute to a healthy and sustainable quality of life within the County.
The WSS Master Technicians will work with other team members who take pride in collaborating and using innovation to develop new strategies to support our customers and better serve the community.
One of the primary services we provide is consistently responding to emergencies in a timely manner.
Specific duties include:
Providing on-site technical assistance and training to crew members by being familiar with a variety of specialized equipment, technical procedures, and safety methods;Assisting in the creation and prioritization of work flows using computerized systems such as Cartegraph, Cayenta, and other systems;Reading plans and blueprints, intersection information, cut sheets, and other means to verify asset locations and ensure efficient work flows;Providing guidance and training to personnel responsible for meter readings and meter inspections;Performing installations, repairs, and maintaining all size water meters;Using investigative methods and specialized equipment to investigate leaks and perform leak detection, utility locations, and other diagnostics necessary for repairs and system maintenance;Coordinating with Crew Leader on the daily work for the crew, such as scheduling work and ensuring that the crews are able to complete work safely using appropriate technical equipment and following applicable County regulations, policies, and accident prevention measures;Responding and mobilizing the team in emergency situations, including communicating and coordinating with appropriate staff;Coordinating with engineering and technical staff to troubleshooting system operations; andInteracting with citizens, contractors DES Utility Billing Office, Miss Utility locators, engineers, and surveyors to support section functions and County-wide service to customers.
Selection Criteria Note:
This recruitment may be used to fill other comparable positions in the Department of Environmental Services, some of which may require additional certification and/or licensure within a specified timeframe.
Minimum:
High School Diploma/GED or equivalent;Three (3) years of experience in public works, construction or another trade vocation that demonstrates the ability to perform skilled manual maintenance and/or construction.
Desirable:
Preference may be given to candidates with one or more of the following:
Experience in construction, maintenance, or operation of water mains, water service, water valves, and fire hydrants, or closely related field; Experience as a senior worker or team leader;Experience with operating, maintaining, and replacing water meters from 5/8 inch to 12 inch;Experience or training in reading blueprints, plans, or system maps; andExperience using computerized maintenance record systems.
Special Requirements License/Certifications Required:
Applicant must possess or obtain within one year of hire, a Confined Space Entry Certification.
Must possess or obtain within one year of hire, a VDOT Intermediate Work Zone Safety Certification.
The applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain, or the applicant must provide a copy of the applicant's official state/district driving record.
Any offer of employment will be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record.
The applicant must provide written consent for Arlington County to obtain from previous employers information required by DOT agency regulations concerning drug and alcohol testing information.
The successful applicant must pass pre-employment drug screening and will be subject to drug screening at such times during employment, as required by federal, state and local standards and policies.
Working Conditions:
Performs activities outdoors.
Subject to hazards such as being near moving vehicles and mechanical parts, electrical currents, exposure to high heat, chemicals, and/or biohazardous waste.
Subject to one or more of the following conditions:
fumes, odors, dusts, dirt, mists, drafts, loud noises, gases or poor ventilation, oils, and other cutting fluids.
Spends long periods of time standing, crouching, stooping, bending, lifting, pushing, pulling, carrying, and/or working in confined spaces and lighting light to heavy objects and equipment.
Required to wear common protective gear or safety equipment such as safety shoes, glasses, gloves, hearing protection, and/or hard hats.
Required to respond to after-hour calls and emergency situations and mandatory overtime may be required on short notice.
Requires learning and following all safety rules and regulations pertaining to job functions which includes attending all required safety classes and meetings in order to ensure a safe working environment and to ensure team members are practicing the required safety rules and regulations.
Requires e xerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
A pre-employment criminal records check will be conducted.

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
