EQUIPMENT MECHANIC I

Position Information The Department of Environmental Services (DES) is seeking an E quipment Mechanic to perform mechanical and related repairs and maintenance on a variety of small to moderate-sized engines, large stationary equipment, and building systems in the Water, Sewer & Streets (WSS) Bureau.
Work involves diagnosing mechanical and electrical problems, determining appropriate repair/replacement techniques, completing repair and preventive maintenance work, and testing results of repair measures.
Specific duties include:
Diagnosing and repairing small to moderate-sized engines, large stationary equipment, and/or building systems (including water pumps, plate compactors, tampers, snow blowers/melters, mowing and saw cutting machines, pipe/chain saws, generators, asphalt cutters, etc.
);Performing preventative maintenance activities;Performing administrative duties using MS Office Word and Excel;Performing shop and inventory duties including working with vendors, ordering equipment, and maintaining electronic records; andParticipating in snow removal operations.
The ideal candidate will have working knowledge of small to medium-sized engines, large stationary equipment, and/or building system utilization, mechanics, and repair.
Excellent skills in written communication and problem solving are essential.
Selection Criteria Minimum:
A combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to diagnose, repair and maintain equipment of like magnitude and complexity used within the Bureau; andAdministrative duties using an automated records system.
Typically, this experience is obtained through a combination of a High School Diploma and/or specialized technical training and at least 18-24 months of mechanical repair work on similar equipment.
Substitution:
Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the education requirement on a year for year basis.
Desirable:
Preference may be given to candidates with experience in one or more of the following:
Construction, utility operations, or in one or more technical areas of water, sewer, or streets operations; and/orBasic computer skills to respond to emails, participate in trainings, and prepare bi-weekly timecards.
Special Requirements Applicant must possess a valid driver license at the time of appointment.
The applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain, or the applicant must provide a copy of the applicant's official state/district driving record.
Any offer of employment will be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record.
A pre-hire background check will be required.
It may include checks of the following:
criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure and credit history.
You will be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.

The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
