Description
TheHosting Infrastructure Data Backup Engineerposition is responsible for configuration, maintenance, and support of the backup technology infrastructure at the National Science Foundation. An engineer in this role will support ongoing backup operations, resolve operational issues, perform new infrastructure deployments and configurations, and participate in technology updates and capacity expansions.
Position Objectives:
Respond quickly and effectively to data backup failures and incidents, ensuring that customer data is protected, and correcting root cause to prevent future occurrences
Participate in projects to deploy, expand, and update the backup technology infrastructure
Adhere closely to Change Management policies and processes
Create and maintain operational documentation used by the global backup teams
Work with clients and account teams to provision and configure backup services
Participate in a global support model and a regional on-call rotation
Perform Problem Management processes to bring recurring issues to resolution and closure
Serve in an ownership role along with other team members to continuously improve services, streamline internal processes, and maximize infrastructure effectiveness
Position Requirements:
Significant knowledge and understanding of data protection technologies, de-duplication, replication, encryption, and the interdependencies between the hosting OS (clients and servers), network, and storage and tape components
Expert knowledge of the following backup tools:
Expert knowledge of the following storage platforms:
Expert knowledge of the following backup infrastructure components:
Knowledge of the following core components:
Symantec NetBackup
EMC Data Domain
NetApp
Quantum and StorageTek tape libraries and devices
Brocade SAN switches
Solaris, Linux, Windows 2003/2008/2012
WAN / LAN network configurations
Job Requirements
Proven analytical and problem solving skills and the ability to apply them in a collaborative manner
Strong focus on delivering excellent customer service
Demonstrated ability to work efficiently, prioritize workflow, and meet demanding deadlines in a fast paced environment
Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to various audiences with clarity and confidence
Willingness to work additional hours and weekends when necessary to resolve incidents or perform change activity
Familiarity with ITIL concepts and best practices
Desired skills:
Programming and Scripting Skills, Active Perl and Shell scripting
Experience in an enterprise data center operation, supporting high-availability infrastructure
Education or Equivalent
Experience:
Minimum of 5 years of technical experience with Symantec NetBackup, Quantum, EMC Data Domain, NetApp, and Brocade technologies
Minimum of 8 years of IT experience
Bachelor's degree in a technically relevant field is preferred
ITIL Foundation certification preferred
