Accomplished teaching professional with 30 years of experience teaching French to adult learners. Winner of the Una Chapman Cox Award for Excellence in Language Teaching. Ten years of experience in training language testers and examiners. Native French speaker.

 

SELECTED ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Taught French to adult learners.  Successfully led students to attain the highest possible scores in French language proficiency. Encouraged students to adopt a Francophone mindset. Ensured that students utilized and reinforced newly-acquired vocabulary and grammatical structure through role playing exercises with the aim of equipping them with the tools of discussing in French a wide assortment of subjects logically, clearly and intelligently. Prepared students for their future diplomatic functions by honing their briefing and interviewing skills, thus ensuring their ability to defend U.S. foreign policy or presenting demarches. This also included tailoring lessons to their professional expertise by including units on technical vocabulary and abstract terms from administrative or military expressions to elevated and political discourse. Sought feedback from students to maximize their learning experience.
 

Trained and mentored language testers and examiners. As the State Department Foreign Service Institute’s (FSI) only full time testing trainer successfully led more than 60 testing and examiner trainees to certification status. Ensured that testers and examiners were thoroughly familiar with the FSI tester training manual, as well as vested in testing principles and their underlying logic. Employed a variety of techniques, such as role-playing and testing simulation, which were later formally adopted into FSI’s training program. Also provided distance training for FSI’s language school in Tunis which culminated in the certification of five testers.

Observed and reviewed tests for quality control. Regularly monitored trainees’ performance while they administered tests to examinees and provided feedback and specific guidance designed to improve their testing skills, with an emphasis on conversation techniques. Conducted individualized and intensified mentoring to meet trainees’ special needs to ensure their attainment of certification or recertification status.

Administered tests in French as tester and in unfamiliar languages as examiner. Tested students in French on a frequent basis. Served as examiner in unfamiliar languages taught at FSI to ensure quality control of testing results. Provided feedback to examinees dissatisfied with their scores.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                

Conducted testing workshops.
Organized and delivered the regularly scheduled testing workshops attended by all trainees, certified testers and examiners, as well as testing unit staff. Initiated and led discussions pertaining to enhancements of training methods and overall improvement of testing unit performance.

Created testing kits. Periodically assisted in the development and improvement of speaking and writing materials for use in testing of unfamiliar languages.

Edited testing manual. Over the course of three years reviewed, edited and made improvements to FSI’s testing training manual.
